CORFU MUSEUMS

The Museum of Asian art is a museum in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George and it’s the only museum in Greece dedicated to the art of Asia. It contains exquisite collections from Asian countries. Built in 1819-1864 (established in 1927), the building has a long history as it has been used for many official political purposes such as Headquarters of the British Commission and the Headquarters of the Ionian Senate, as well as the Greek Royal Family’s summer residence. The majority of the exhibits are donations from prominent Greek citizens, the Municipality of Corfu and the National Archaeological Museum.

What you can find there:

Collections and contents: Chinese artifacts from the Ming, Sung, Tcheou, Chang, Han, Wei, Ch’ing dynasties, Japanese artifacts such as weapons and masks and artifacts from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet, Cambodia, Korea, Thailand and Siam. Furniture, portraits, medals, paintings and relics of the presidents of the Ionian Senate and of the particular era.

The Public Library of Corfu is the oldest public library in Greece. It’s beginning is dated back in the mid of the 18^th century. The library operates continuously for over three centuries and has in its possession remarkable collections and books of inestimable historical value, with the oldest ones dating back to the 1480! 

Today the public library of Corfu has more than 13.000 members.

Equipped with a well maintained Info-Center, with three computers specially adapted for people with disabilities and e-book readers (kindles) that can me borrowed for 20 days loan.

Recently the library has opened an event hall to the public and organizes events, exhibitions and lectures.

The Banknote Museum is one of a kind in Greece and one of the existing few in the world. It is now under the auspices of Alpha Bank.

At the museum you can find various banknotes,collections and contents.

Banknotes issued from 1839 to 1920, by the National Bank of Greece.

A banknote from China that was issued in 1300 AD and is considered one of the oldest in the world.

Post-war banknotes from other countries, documents, seals, photographs, coins, stamps, etc.

The Serbian museum of Corfu houses is a museum that houses rare exhibits about the Serbian soldiers tragic fate during the First World War. The remnants of the Serbian Army (about 150,000 soldiers) together with their government in exile, found refuge and shelter in Corfu, following the collapse of the Serbian Front as a result of the Austrian – Hungarian attack of the 6 October 1915. Exhibits include photographs from the three years stay of the Serbians in Corfu, together with other exhibits such as uniforms, arms and ammunition of the Serbian army, Serbian regimental flags, religious artifacts, surgical tools and other decorations of the Kingdom of Serbia.

The island of Corfu was used during the First World War as a British and United States naval base. A convalescent camp and military hospital were also stationed there. In 1916, the island was used as a rest camp for the Serbian army.

Corfu British Cemetery was opened as a military cemetery in about 1855, and contains 13 First World War burials. The Second World War burials are mostly of casualties from destroyers mined in the Corfu channel.

The Commission also maintains 438 non-war military and civilian graves in the cemetery including 1 unnamed civilian teacher. There is a collective grave containing an unspecified number of unidentified victims of the collision of H.M.S
